PUP’s Syscon Changer: A Scene Changer?

This past Tuesday saw the release of PUP’s Syscon changer from Nathan_r32_69. For those of you who are unfamiliar with how the software works, it essentially takes a PS3 update file, and changes the required version number to something higher than what is installed on your system allowing you to easily install OFW over any custom firmware setup that you might have. So what’s my opinion on the matter? Obviously what we have here is a showcase of some pretty substantial progress for our community. Obviously as it stands right now, swapping and changing CFWs can sometimes be an annoying procedure, but this early build would make things a lot easier on everybody that currently has a hacked console. Obviously right now what we have is a very early build so it’s sort of a risk to be trying out, but that doesn’t make it any less important for those that are hacking at this present moment.

However, for as many of you that have modded PS3s, there’s an even larger crowd of people that are chomping at the bit to get on custom firmware. Unfortunately, the way this app works right now means that it won’t impact any of you hopefuls in the slightest which is admittedly a bit of a downer. You might be thinking that simply changing the syscon to something higher than your OFW might somehow magically allow you to get CFW flashed on any PS3, but alas Sony has taken the proper precautions to prevent that. All that being said, I’m glad this tool is out there for us to use, but like many I would love to see something that could impact our OFW masses.

Next up we’ll have a discussion about the ever elusive PS4!
