Just now Sony announced project Morpheus, officially entering the re-emerging Virtual Reality gaming scene, in direct competition with the likes of the Oculus rift. Before you guys get too excited, there isn’t a release date yet.
Above is a picture of the latest prototype which is on show on the PlayStation booth at GDC 2014. There aren’t a lot of details out yet except for that Sony has been working on this for 3 years now and that the head mounted display is 1080p with 90 degrees of freedom. The headset simulates a full 360 environment through the use of sensors in the headset and the PlayStation camera to track your head and adjust the picture appropriately.
Here’s the cool part, Sony’s working with NASA (or did they mean the NSA ) to develop the headset, mainly because Sony’s interested in it’s gaming applications while NASA’s interested in it’s uses for more realistic simulations.
As expected, there are rumors that Microsoft is also working on a Virtual Reality headset. Microsoft however, hasn’t mentioned anything new about their prototype Illumiroom technology (which I must admit is pretty amazing too)
Seems like Sony has managed to grab everyone’s attention again with Project Morpheus as it’s the first thing in google auto-predict if you type “Project M”. However, we’ll have to wait till the end of the day to get some videos, so for now, a video from IGN summing it all up:
and for those who somehow missed the Microsoft Illumiroom video:
Personally, I’m quite excited about this as it seems like we might have a real sword art online or Accel world in the next few years (or maybe not but I’d rather be optimistic :D ) For those who don’t know what Sword Art Online is, it’s an insanely awesome anime series where players get trapped in a Virtual Reality MMORPG.
That’s all for now folks, it’s 1 AM here so off to bed!Tweet this!
