The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are consistently competing with each other, while Nintendo’s Wii has quietly been rolling in the sales and taking an enormous lead over its competitors. In fact, the Wii gained a 23 million lead over its closest competitor (PS3).
Does this mean the family console is set to take 1st place? Nintendo has recently revealed the Wii Mini to the world, this was the companies last attempt at grasping sales from their consumers. Unfortunately for Nintendo, the Wii Mini has been somewhat of a flop so far, only selling 36,000 units. However with such a grand lead, The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have no hope of catching up before the next generation lands…or do they?
With sales figures between the PS3 and Xbox 360 so close, the battle for second place has taken a lot of focus away from the Nintendo Wii but what if that was to change? Back in the days of the PS2, Sony dropped the retail price of their system dramatically towards the end of its life cycle (2006), which helped gain a staggering 40 million extra sales. If they were to do this today, there is a strong possibility they would leap frog the Wii’s sales. The same applies for the Xbox 360.
With the Wii Mini still being ‘new’ and a lot of focus already on Nintendo Wii U, the original system is unlikely to see another price drop, leaving plenty of time for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to play catch up. Its a long shot, but it could happen.
